John May is the Founder and Managing Partner of CORE Industrial Partners, a Chicago-based private equity firm with over $230 million AUM that invests in lower middle market manufacturing and industrial technology companies. He is responsible for all activities of the firm including investment sourcing and valuation, transaction structuring, the securing of acquisition financing, fundraising and all administrative activities. He has over 20 years of investment and operating experience. Before forming CORE, he spent 18 years working on transactions with several private equity sponsors principally with The Blackstone Group and H.I.G. Capital. He has completed over 20 transactions in his career and has served as a President & CEO of six private equity backed companies with revenues ranging from $90 to $450 million. He also has worked in the public sector as a divisional CEO for a publicly-traded business and is highly respected in the Industrials sector.
Mr. May’s extensive investment experience includes acquiring various family-owned, entrepreneurial, corporate carve-out, distressed, special-situation, and private equity owned businesses. He continues to sit on the Board of Directors of several private equity portfolio companies, past and present including all of CORE Industrial Partners portfolio companies.
May graduated with Honors from East Carolina University with a business degree. He currently serves on the East Carolina University Foundation, Inc. Board of Directors and is a member of the Investment Committee. He is also Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board for Imerman Angels, a 501(c)(3) Chicago-based cancer support organization. He is an Advisory Board member for the Industrial Exchange. He also is an active member of YPO (Young Presidents’ Organization), a member of The Economic Club of Chicago, and obtained his Level I Sommelier accreditation from The International Sommelier Guild.
